Cast Irons
Cast irons are golf clubs made by pouring molten metal into a pre-shaped mould, a process called casting. They are the most common type of iron, valued for their forgiveness and lower cost.
What are cast irons?
A cast iron starts as liquid metal. Manufacturers heat stainless steel until it melts, then pour it into a mould shaped like the clubhead. The metal cools and sets into a rough clubhead, which is then finished and fitted with a shaft and grip. That casting step shapes how most modern irons look and feel.
Casting matters because it gives designers freedom that older manufacturing could not. Pouring liquid metal into a mould lets engineers build hollow cavities and push weight to the edges of the head in ways that would be hard to hammer out of solid steel. That freedom is what produces the cavity-back designs and large sweet spots associated with forgiving, easy-to-hit irons.
The approach took hold thanks to PING founder Karsten Solheim, who was the first to use investment casting for irons in the late 1960s and built the first mass-produced cast set, the K-1, in 1969. According to PING, more than 90% of all irons made today are investment cast. The other main method, forging, presses a single piece of steel into shape and tends to suit skilled players who want a softer feel.
How cast irons are made
Casting in golf is a version of a centuries-old technique that PING calls the lost-wax process. The steel is liquidised in a furnace and poured into a ceramic mould, which sets the shape of the clubhead before the club is finished.
The metal itself is usually stainless steel. Titleist notes that cast iron heads are commonly made from 431 or 17-4 grade stainless steel, alloys that contain chromium and nickel for strength and resistance to wear. These steels are hard and durable, which is part of why cast irons hold up well to regular play.
Because each head comes from the same mould, casting is consistent and repeats easily. A factory can produce a high volume of near-identical heads quickly, which keeps costs down. The process also lets designers move weight around the head and build complex internal shapes, so a single iron set can be tuned club by club for launch and control.
Cast irons vs forged irons
Most people searching for cast irons want to know how they differ from forged irons. The split comes down to how the head is made, and that difference shapes feel, forgiveness, and price.
Forged irons begin as a solid billet of carbon steel, often grade 1025, that is heated until malleable and then pressed and hammered into shape. Many golfers describe the result as a softer feel with more feedback at impact, and the compact heads make it easier to shape shots. The trade-off is a smaller sweet spot and less help on mishits.
Cast irons go the other way. The mould lets manufacturers add perimeter weighting and cavity backs that raise the clubhead’s moment of inertia, or MOI, a measure of how much the head resists twisting on off-centre strikes. Higher MOI means a mishit stays straighter and loses less distance. Cast irons also cost less to make, so they tend to be cheaper.

The lines between the two have blurred. Modern hollow-body and multi-material designs can give a cast iron a feel close to forged, and some makers forge a face onto a cast body. The construction label alone no longer tells the whole story.
Who cast irons are for
Cast irons suit a wide range of players, but they are often linked with beginners and higher-handicap golfers because the forgiveness helps off-centre hits stay playable. Larger heads and perimeter weighting make it easier to get the ball airborne and keep bad swings on the fairway.
That reputation leads to a common myth: that cast irons are only for beginners. Stitch Golf points out that over half of professional golfers use a combination of forged and cast clubs in the bag. Casting is versatile enough to produce everything from chunky game-improvement irons to compact, tour-level heads, so the method spans every skill level rather than belonging to one.
