A short history of the steel shaft
For most of golf’s history, shafts were wood. Hickory became the standard in the 1800s. It demanded a slow, careful swing, because the wood flexed and twisted so much. The breakthrough came in the 1920s, and in 1924 the USGA legalized steel shafts; Cyril Walker won that year’s U.S. Open with a steel-shafted putter. Britain’s R&A followed in 1929, after the Prince of Wales played a steel-shafted set at St Andrews.
Adoption took some persuading. When Spalding released its Bobby Jones irons in 1930, the steel shafts were painted tan to mimic the look of familiar hickory.
