A wrist hinge is the upward cocking of the wrists during the backswing that creates the angle between the lead arm and the club shaft. It stores energy for the downswing and helps keep the clubface square.


What is a wrist hinge?

A wrist hinge is one of the small but powerful movements that lets a golfer swing the club faster without swinging harder. As the club moves back, the wrists cock upward, folding so that the thumbs move toward the forearms. That fold creates an angle between the lead arm and the shaft, and that angle is where a lot of a swing’s speed comes from.

The easiest way to picture it is a hammer. Before tapping a nail, a person naturally cocks the wrist back, then snaps it forward to add force. A golf swing borrows the same idea on a larger scale: the wrists load on the way back and release through the ball, adding clubhead speed at the moment it matters most.

The hinge does a second job that matters just as much as power. The wrists are the last link between the body and the clubface, so their position controls where the face points at impact. Coaches often describe the wrists as the part of the swing that steers the face, which is why a small change in hinge can turn a straight shot into a slice or a hook.

How a wrist hinge works

The hinge usually begins to appear once the hands reach about waist height in the backswing, rather than right at the start. Golf Monthly coaches John Howells and Katie Dawkins suggest a useful checkpoint: when the lead arm is parallel to the ground, the angle between the lead arm and the shaft should sit around 90 to 100 degrees. That range gives enough leverage to deliver speed without the club collapsing behind the player.

At the top of the swing, the lead wrist should be relatively flat rather than badly cupped, with the hinge set but not overdone. On the way down, the wrists hold that angle and then release it through impact, which is the moment the stored energy transfers into the ball. Wrist hinge vs. forearm rotation

Most confusion about the hinge comes from mixing it up with forearm rotation, and the two are not the same. A hinge is an up-and-down cocking of the wrists. Forearm rotation, sometimes called roll, turns the hands so the palms change direction, like turning a doorknob. Both happen in a full swing, but they move on different planes and do different things.

The distinction matters because they affect the ball in different ways. Hinging mainly loads the club for speed, while rolling the forearms and changing wrist angle is what opens or closes the face. A player who tries to add power by rolling the wrists instead of hinging them often ends up spraying shots, because rotation changes aim while the hinge changes speed.

The wrist movements behind the hinge

Sports scientists describe the wrist as having three pairs of movements, and golf instruction borrows the anatomical names. According to Keiser University College of Golf, the wrist hinge in the golf swing is built mainly from radial and ulnar deviation, with flexion and extension controlling the clubface. How much hinge, and when

There is no single correct amount of hinge that suits every golfer. The right amount depends on the player’s grip, flexibility, swing type, and the shot being played. The 90 to 100 degree checkpoint from Golf Monthly is a helpful guide for a full swing, but a delicate pitch needs far less, and some players naturally set the club earlier or later than others.

Timing tends to cause more trouble than amount. Hinge too early, and the swing can get steep and handsy; hinge too late, and the downswing turns rushed. The most common fault is releasing the hinge too soon on the way down, known as casting, which throws the clubhead past the hands and drains the speed the hinge was meant to deliver.

The driver and the irons follow the same hinge pattern, though the feel differs.
