Forged Irons

Forged irons are golf clubs whose heads are shaped from a single piece of soft carbon steel, pressed or hammered into form under heavy pressure. Golfers prize them for their soft feel and the control they give skilled players over how the ball flies.


What are forged irons?

The word “forged” describes how the clubhead is made, rather than how it looks or who plays it. A forged iron starts as a solid bar of carbon steel called a billet. That billet is heated until it softens, then squeezed into the rough shape of a clubhead under enormous force before being finished by hand. Because the metal is worked as one continuous piece, the internal grain of the steel stays tight and uninterrupted from heel to toe.

That construction is the whole point. The dense, packed grain is what gives forged irons the soft, communicative sensation at impact that better players talk about, and the softer steel lets a fitter bend the club to adjust loft and lie. Forged irons sit on one side of the oldest divide in iron design: forged on one hand, cast on the other. Understanding the term mostly means understanding that split.

How forged irons are made

Forging is the older of the two methods, borrowed from centuries of toolmaking and bladesmithing. It begins with a billet of carbon steel, usually a soft grade such as 1025 or 1025E, sometimes 8620 or a Japanese steel like S25C. The billet is heated until it is malleable rather than molten, then pressed between shaped dies or struck repeatedly by a hammer until it takes the form of a clubhead.

A forged head is far from finished at that stage. It still has to be ground, buffed, and detailed by hand to hit the exact specifications of the design, after which grooves are cut, and a protective plating is added. That hand finishing is why forging takes longer and costs more than casting. The carbon steel underneath also rusts more readily than the stainless steel used in most cast irons, according to Today’s Golfer, which is why nearly every forged set carries a chrome or nickel plating to protect it.

Mizuno has forged irons in the same Hiroshima factory since 1968, using a process it calls Grain Flow Forged that presses the head from a single billet to keep the steel’s grain running continuously through the hitting area.

Forged vs cast irons

Almost everyone searching for this term is trying to sort out forged from cast, so it helps to put them side by side. Casting, which took hold in golf during the 1970s, pours molten steel into a pre-made mold. That single difference in process drives nearly every other distinction between the two.

Casting is cheaper and more flexible. That lets manufacturers build the wider, cavity-backed shapes that make a club easier to hit, which is why cast irons account for the overwhelming majority of sets sold, by GolfSpan’s estimate, between 85 and 90 percent. Forged irons give up some of that built-in help in exchange for feel and control. That trade is the reason they have long been tied to low-handicap players and tour professionals.

Forged irons vs blades and cavity backs

A common mix-up treats “forged” and “blade” as the same thing. They describe different attributes. Forged refers to the manufacturing method; blade, muscle back, and cavity back describe the head’s shape and weight distribution.

A blade, or muscle back, has a thin, compact head with most of its mass concentrated behind the center. A cavity back hollows out the rear of the head and pushes weight to the perimeter for forgiveness. The reason the confusion exists is historical: the classic forged iron was a muscle-back blade, so the two ideas grew up together. Today, that link has loosened. Forged cavity backs are common, and models such as the Srixon ZX series and Mizuno Pro 243 pair a forged feel with the help of a cavity-backed shape. A club can be forged and forgiving at the same time.

Who plays forged irons

Forged irons have a reputation as experts-only equipment, and there is some truth to it. A consistent ball striker gets the most out of the soft feel, the shot-shaping ability, and the clean look of a compact forged head, while a player who misses the center of the face often will feel those misses more sharply on a forged blade than on a forgiving cast iron.

That reputation is also dated. Many tour players carry cast or hybrid long irons alongside forged short irons, and the rise of forged cavity backs and hollow-bodied “players distance” irons such as the TaylorMade P790 means mid-handicappers can now enjoy a forged feel without giving up much forgiveness. Skill level still guides the choice, but the old rule that forged irons are off-limits to anyone outside scratch range no longer holds.

Common misconceptions

The biggest misunderstanding is that forged irons feel soft purely because of the metal. Material plays a part, but club designers, including Titleist, note that much of the sensation a golfer reads as “feel” comes from the head’s geometry and how its components resonate, not from forging alone. A well-built cast iron can feel excellent, and a poorly weighted forged one will not feel special.

A second misconception is that anything labeled forged is forged as a single piece. In practice, some clubs forge only the face and weld it to a cast body, which is not the same as a true one-piece forging where the grain runs uninterrupted across the whole head. The third myth, that forged automatically means hard to hit, comes from the blade association covered above and no longer survives contact with modern forged cavity backs.
