Shaft Profile

A shaft profile is a map of how stiff or soft a golf shaft is at each point along its length, from the grip end down to the clubhead. It is also called a bend profile.


What is a shaft profile?

Flex tells you how much a shaft bends overall. A shaft profile tells you where it bends. Those are different things, and the difference is the whole reason the term exists.

Picture a driver shaft as three connected zones: the butt section near the grip, the mid section, and the tip section closest to the head. A profile describes the stiffness of each zone separately. One shaft might be firm in the hands but soft down by the head. Another might be the reverse. Both could carry the same “stiff” label on the outside, yet they can feel and perform in noticeably different ways.

That is why two shafts stamped with identical flex and weight can still send the ball on different flights. The label is a single word; the profile is the full picture behind it. Manufacturers design these stiffness patterns on purpose to shape how a shaft loads during the swing and how it presents the clubface at impact.

The three sections of a shaft

A profile is built from three zones along the shaft. Each does a different job, and a golfer tends to feel each one at a different moment in the swing.

The butt section sits under the grip and shapes the first impression of a shaft, especially at the top of the swing and through impact. According to True Spec master fitter Eric Hickman, players who generate a lot of speed often prefer a firmer butt for a stable, controlled feel, while smoother-tempo players may like a softer butt that helps them build speed.

The mid section influences the overall feel through the swing and is the starting point for how the shaft launches and spins the ball. A faster player might want a stable, one-piece sensation here. A slower or smoother swing may want to feel the shaft load more in the downswing.

The tip section, nearest the head, is the most active part of the profile. Hickman notes that it plays a major role in launch and spin. A softer tip tends to raise launch, and a firmer tip tends to lower it while feeling more stable through the ball. This is why shaft makers often reinforce the tip with tougher materials to keep it consistent.

How shaft profiles are described

Golfers run into shaft profiles in a few different formats, and they range from plain-English labels to engineering graphs.

The simplest version is a set of firmness words for each section. Mitsubishi’s Diamana line is a clear example. The Diamana WB reads roughly Firm butt, Firm-plus mid, Medium-plus tip, which points to a low, stable flight. The softer Diamana RB reads Medium butt, Medium mid, Soft tip, which leans toward easier launch. Same family of shafts, three different personalities.

Some makers simplify further and hand a shaft a launch-and-spin badge instead, such as “low launch, low spin” or “mid launch, mid-high spin.” True Fit Clubs sorts its tested shafts into trajectory bands of Low, Low-Mid, Mid, Mid-High, and High based on the numbers it records.

The most detailed version is the EI curve, sometimes called an EI profile chart. It plots the shaft’s stiffness at regular intervals along its length, so you can see the stiffness rise and fall from butt to tip on a single graph. Fitting specialist Jim Mitchell of Peter Field Golf describes the EI curve as the way a bend profile is represented: the line sits high where the shaft is stiff and drops where it is soft. Fitters lean on these charts to compare shafts side by side rather than trusting the label alone.

Shaft profile vs. kick point vs. flex

Most people arrive at this term because they have mixed it up with a neighboring one. Three specs get tangled together most often.

Flex is the overall bendiness of a shaft, sorted into ratings like regular, stiff, or extra stiff. It broadly matches a player’s swing speed. Kick point, also called the bend point or flex point, is the single spot where a shaft bends the most during the swing. A low kick point sits nearer the head and helps the ball climb; a high kick point keeps flight lower.

A shaft profile is the broader idea that contains both. Rather than naming one flex rating or one bend point, it describes stiffness across the entire length. Golf shaft designer Tom Wishon has described bend profile as the next step beyond kick point, since a shaft does not hinge at one spot but instead varies in stiffness along its whole length. Kick point names a single location. A profile maps the whole thing.

Torque sits alongside the profile as a separate spec. It measures how far a shaft twists around its own axis, expressed in degrees, and it shapes feel and face stability more than trajectory. Golf.com notes that makers control it by layering materials such as Kevlar, carbon, and Boron to resist unwanted twisting at impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a shaft profile the same as flex?

No. Flex is a single rating for how much the whole shaft bends. A profile describes where along the shaft that bending happens, which is why two shafts with the same flex can behave differently.

Does a shaft profile change ball flight?

It has an effect, though a modest one next to the golfer’s own swing. Fitters treat it as a fine-tuning tool for launch, spin, and feel once flex and weight are already close.

Where can I find a shaft’s profile?

Manufacturers publish section firmness labels or launch-and-spin designations on their websites, and some provide full EI curves. A club fitter can also measure a shaft directly.

Do irons and drivers have shaft profiles?

Yes. Every golf shaft has a profile, whether steel or graphite. Graphite allows makers finer control over the stiffness of each section, so driver and wood shafts often show the most varied profiles.
