Hip Mobility

Hip mobility in golf is the ability to actively rotate your hips through their full range of motion with control. It lets the pelvis turn freely during the swing, which is where much of a golfer’s power and consistency comes from.


What is hip mobility?

Hip mobility describes how well the hip joints move through their available range under your own control, rather than how far they can be stretched. In the golf swing, two movements matter most: internal rotation and external rotation. Internal rotation is the thigh turning inward toward the body’s midline; external rotation is the thigh turning outward. Both hips do both jobs at different points in the swing.

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. That design gives it more directions of movement than almost any other joint in the body, which is exactly what golfers draw on to load the trail hip on the way back and clear the lead hip coming through. When the hips move well, the pelvis rotates around a stable centre and the rest of the body follows in sequence. When they don’t, the swing has to find that motion somewhere else, usually the lower back.

Why hip mobility matters in golf

The golf swing builds power from the ground up. Leo Rooney, director of performance at Urban Golf Performance, describes the hips as the biggest gear in that sequence, the point where energy from the legs is either passed up into the torso or lost. He lays out the order as feet, legs, hips, torso, arms, hands, and finally the club. If the hips can’t rotate on cue, the chain breaks early, and the arms take over too soon.

Restricted hips also tend to push stress onto the spine. Research from the Titleist Performance Institute found that the average PGA Tour player has more than 45 degrees of internal hip rotation on each side, and TPI co-founder Dr. Greg Rose links that mobility directly to swing speed and ball-striking consistency. Golfers without it compensate through the lumbar spine, a region built to flex and extend rather than rotate. That helps explain why low back trouble is so common in the sport: one study cited by Tonal attributes about 25 percent of golf injuries to the lower back, and physical therapy group MovementX notes that 15 to 34 percent of golfers report low back pain, often alongside limited hip internal rotation.

How the hips move during the swing

On the backswing, the trail hip (the right hip for a right-handed golfer) loads and rotates internally as the pelvis turns away from the target. A useful benchmark: golfers tend to rotate the hips to roughly 45 degrees while the shoulders turn closer to 90. That gap between hip turn and shoulder turn is called separation, and it stores the torque that powers the downswing.

Coming down, the lead hip takes over. It rotates internally and clears out of the way so the pelvis can open toward the target and the club can swing through freely. GOLFTEC’s Nick Clearwater, drawing on the company’s analysis of hundreds of thousands of swings, notes that tour players turn their hips somewhere between 30 and 40 degrees by impact, measured from address.

Throughout all of this, the hips should turn around a fairly steady centre rather than drifting side to side. Excessive lateral movement toward the trail foot going back, or the lead foot coming down, is a sign the rotation isn’t there. Mobility is what keeps the motion rotational instead of sliding.

Hip mobility vs. hip flexibility

These two terms get used as if they mean the same thing, but they describe different qualities. Flexibility is passive: how far a muscle and its surrounding tissue can be lengthened when something else does the work, like gravity or a stretch. Mobility is active: how well you can move a joint through its range using your own muscles, with strength and control.

The distinction matters on the course because a golfer can be flexible sitting in a stretch yet still lack the controlled rotation to repeat it at swing speed. Mobility is the more functional of the two for golf, since the swing demands range you can command in a fraction of a second.

Signs of limited hip mobility

Because the body hides restriction well, poor hip mobility usually shows up as a swing fault rather than an obvious lack of movement. Common tells include sway, where the lower body shifts away from the target on the backswing instead of rotating, and slide, the same lateral drift toward the target on the way down.

Two swing characteristics defined by the Titleist Performance Institute often trace back to the hips as well. Early extension is any movement of the hips toward the ball during the downswing, which forces a loss of posture and inconsistent contact. Loss of posture is any significant change from the angles you set at address. Golfers may also struggle to finish in a full, balanced follow-through. None of these confirm a mobility problem on their own, but together they point toward hips that aren’t rotating the way the swing needs.

Which hip matters more in the golf swing?

Both play a part. The trail hip loads on the backswing while the lead hip clears through impact, so a shortfall in either one can leak power or add strain.
