Drivable Par 4
A drivable par 4 is a short par-4 hole where a golfer can reach the green with their tee shot, leaving a putt for eagle instead of the usual approach shot.
What is a drivable par 4?
Most par 4s ask for two good shots to reach the green: a drive, then an approach. A drivable par 4 collapses that into one. The hole is short enough that a well-struck tee shot can finish on or near the putting surface, turning a routine two-shot hole into a gamble for eagle or an easy birdie.
The word “drivable” does a lot of work here, and it is deliberately slippery. Whether a hole is actually drivable depends on who is standing on the tee. A 310-yard hole is a real driver-at-the-green decision for a long hitter and simply a short par 4 for someone who carries the ball 200 yards. Wind and firm ground change the math too, and so does elevation. A downwind, downhill hole plays far shorter than its scorecard number, which is why the same hole can be drivable one day and out of reach the next.
That relativity is the point rather than a flaw. Golf course architect Tom Weiskopf, who put the drivable par 4 at the centre of modern design and built more than 70 courses each with at least one, has said the appeal is how many different things can happen on the same hole. The hole rewards the bold and still leaves room for the careful.
How long is a drivable par 4?
There is no official yardage that makes a par 4 “drivable,” because governing bodies do not recognise the category at all. What they define is par itself. Under the World Handicap System used by the USGA and R&A, a hole measuring roughly 240 to 490 yards for men, or 200 to 420 yards for women, falls in the normal par-4 range. The USGA bases this on a male scratch golfer averaging 250-yard tee shots and a female scratch golfer averaging 210 yards.
In practice, drivable par 4s tend to sit at the short end of that band, usually somewhere between 280 and 350 yards from the relevant tee. Some tour examples give a sense of the scale. The 17th at TPC Scottsdale plays around 332 yards and is the only par 4 in PGA Tour history to have been aced. The redesigned 12th at TPC Sawgrass was set up at about 302 yards for the 2017 Players Championship specifically so most of the field could reach it off the tee.
Yardage alone never tells the whole story, though. Golf Monthly notes that below roughly 220 yards off the tee in still air, no par 4 is realistically drivable for a given player, so the label always bends to the golfer and the conditions.
The risk and reward that define the hole
What separates a drivable par 4 from any other short hole is the decision it forces on the tee. The golfer has to choose: take driver and aim at the green for a shot at eagle, or lay up short with an iron and rely on a wedge and a putt for par.
A well-designed drivable par 4 makes that choice hard. Writing for The Fried Egg, golf architecture analyst Garrett Morrison describes the balance these holes need to work. Going for the green has to carry real danger, often water or a steep run-off around a tightly guarded green. The reward for pulling it off has to be worth it. And the safe lay-up cannot be a free pass to birdie, or nobody would take the risk.
This tension is why the hole is prized by course designers and exciting to watch. A short hitter who plays smart can beat a long hitter who gets greedy, so power helps without settling the outcome. On the same hole, one player might make eagle and the next a double bogey, which is exactly the drama the design invites.
Drivable par 4 vs. long par 3 vs. reachable par 5
Because a drivable par 4 sits between other hole types, it is easy to confuse with them. The distinctions come down to how the hole is meant to be played.
| Hole type | Typical length | How it is played |
|---|---|---|
| Drivable par 4 | ~280-350 yds | Green reachable off the tee, but laying up is a real option. Both strategies are used. |
| Long par 3 | 220-260 yds | Everyone aims for the green off the tee. There is no lay-up decision. |
| Reachable par 5 | ~460-520 yds | Green reachable in two good shots, not one. Eagle needs two great strikes. |
| Standard short par 4 | ~290-370 yds | Too long to drive for most, so it plays as drive-and-wedge. |
The line between a drivable par 4 and a long par 3 is subtle but important. Morrison draws it this way: if almost every player attempts the green from the tee, the hole behaves like a long par 3 regardless of what the card says. It only earns the “drivable par 4” name when laying up and going for it are both sensible, commonly chosen strategies.
The comparison with a reachable par 5 is the one players raise most. Both offer a rare run at eagle. The difference is how many perfect shots it takes. A drivable par 4 asks for one great swing; a reachable par 5 asks for two in a row. That single-shot glory is a big part of why the drivable par 4 has such a following.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a drivable par 4 the same as a short par 4?
Not quite. Every drivable par 4 is a short par 4, but the reverse is not true. Take a 360-yard hole: it is short, yet still sits out of reach off the tee for most players. Drivable means the green can be reached in one shot.
Can average golfers drive a par 4?
Sometimes, on the right hole in the right conditions. A hole around 280 to 300 yards playing downhill or downwind can be reachable for a player who carries a driver 240 yards or more. For shorter hitters, the same hole simply plays as a normal short par 4.
Why do golf courses build drivable par 4s?
They create decisions. A drivable par 4 gives bigger hitters a chance to attack and shorter hitters a chance to score through smart play, and it produces a wide range of results, which makes the hole memorable for players and spectators alike.
What score is good on a drivable par 4?
Birdie is a strong result and eagle is the prize. Because the risk is real, bogeys and worse are common when a tee shot finds trouble, so par is never a bad outcome.
