Putter Loft

Putter loft is the small backward angle of a putter’s face, usually between 2 and 4 degrees, that lifts the ball out of its tiny resting spot on the green and starts it rolling smoothly toward the hole.


What is putter loft?

Every club has loft, the angle of the face measured against a vertical line, and the putter is no exception. It looks flat, which is why golfers nickname it the flatstick, but the face actually tilts back a few degrees. That tilt is the loft.

The number is small compared with the rest of the bag. A driver carries roughly 9 to 13 degrees and a lob wedge sits around 60 to 64, while a putter rarely goes past 4. Those few degrees still do real work. Without them, the face would press straight into the back of a ball that sits slightly below the grass line, and the roll would suffer for it.

Putter loft has two parts, and separating them early helps: the loft built into the club at rest, and the loft that actually meets the ball once a golfer makes a stroke. Those two numbers are often different. The gap between them explains a lot about why putts behave the way they do.

Why putters have loft

A golf ball never sits perfectly on top of the green. Its weight pushes it down into a shallow depression, so part of the ball rests below the surface of the grass. A face with no loft would drive the ball forward and down into that dip, and it would hop or skid before finding a roll.

Loft solves that. The slight upward angle lifts the ball out of the depression and onto the top of the grass, where it can begin an end-over-end roll almost straight away. Casey Schultz, a product manager at Cleveland Golf, describes the job as freeing the ball from its impression on the green and starting it rolling without either driving it into the ground or popping it too far into the air.

Get the amount wrong in either direction, and the putt pays for it. Too little loft pushes the ball down, so it bounces or skids before settling. Too much loft launches it higher than needed and adds backspin, which fights the smooth topspin roll that keeps a putt on line. Even a clean strike skids briefly first: on a typical eight-foot putt, the ball can slide up to ten inches before the true roll takes over, according to testing reported by Golf.com.

Static loft vs dynamic loft

Most of the confusion around putter loft comes from one distinction. There is the loft the club is built with, and the loft the ball feels at impact, and they have separate names.

Static loft is the loft stamped on the putter, measured with the club sitting square at address. Dynamic loft, sometimes called effective loft, is the loft delivered at the moment the face meets the ball. A golfer’s hands turn one into the other.

Pressing the hands ahead of the ball, a move known as a forward press, reduces the loft the ball sees. A putter built with 3 degrees can deliver closer to 1 if the hands lean forward at impact. Letting the hands hang back does the opposite and adds loft. Phil Mickelson is the classic illustration: his pronounced forward press means he has putted with as much as 7 degrees of static loft, so the club plays around 4 degrees by the time it reaches the ball, a point noted by National Club Golfer and Golf.com.

This is why two golfers with identical putters can get completely different rolls. The static number is only a starting point. Fitting data from PING shows that even consistent putters shift their hand position by 2 to 4 degrees from one stroke to the next, so dynamic loft is a moving target rather than a fixed setting.

How much loft a putter has

Off the shelf, most putters land between 2 and 4 degrees, with 3 to 4 degrees the common standard in pro shops. Brands settle on slightly different defaults. Scotty Cameron models are often built around 3.5 degrees, while Odyssey has favoured 3. On tour, the spread runs wider, from about 1 degree up to 6 or 7, though the aim is usually an effective loft of 3 to 4 degrees once the golfer’s stroke is factored in, as golf writer Brent Kelley explains.

There is a legal ceiling, too. The USGA and R&A define a putter as a club with a loft of no more than 10 degrees, and anything higher is treated as a wedge or iron instead. That limit rarely matters in practice, since almost no golfer gains anything from a putter lofted anywhere near it.

What changes the loft you need

The right loft is personal, because dynamic loft depends on how a golfer delivers the club. A handful of things move it.

Stroke type matters most. A player whose hands press forward at impact takes loft off and may need more static loft to compensate, while a player who catches the ball slightly on the upswing adds loft and may want less to begin with. Ball position feeds into this as well, since a ball played forward in the stance tends to get struck on the way up.

Green speed is the other big factor. Faster greens reward less loft, because the ball needs little help to get rolling and skidding is less of a worry. Slower or grainier greens can call for a touch more, to lift the ball cleanly out of thicker grass and start it turning over sooner.

Because these variables feed off each other, the reliable way to match loft to a stroke is a putter fitting, where a launch monitor or a system like SAM PuttLab reads the loft the ball actually receives. That measurement, not the figure stamped on the sole, is what governs the roll.
