Loft Gapping

Loft gapping is the way the lofts of the clubs in a golfer’s bag are spaced so that each club carries its own distinct distance, usually in steps of roughly 10 to 15 yards.


What is loft gapping?

Every club has a loft, the angle of the clubface measured from vertical, and that angle is the main thing deciding how far the ball flies. Loft gapping is what happens when you look at all those lofts together across the bag. The goal is simple: each club should cover a distance the next one does not, without big holes or wasted overlap.

In practice, good gapping means the lofts rise in steady steps. Irons usually sit about 3 to 5 degrees apart, and wedges about 4 to 6 degrees apart, which for most golfers works out to a 10 to 15 yard carry difference from one club to the next, according to fitting resources such as Club Fitting Directory and MyGolfSpy.

Golfers only get 14 clubs under the Rules of Golf, so every slot counts. Loft gapping is how a player makes sure those clubs cover the full range of distances they actually face, rather than leaving an awkward yardage with nothing to hit. How loft gapping works

Loft and carry distance move together. As a rough rule, one degree of loft is worth about three yards of carry, a figure MyGolfSpy uses when it walks golfers through gapping their bag. Space the lofts evenly, and the distances space out evenly too.

Picture a ladder. If your 5-iron flies 180 yards and your 6-iron flies 170, that 10-yard step is your gapping, and you want the 7-iron landing near 160 to keep it going. Golf Digest uses that same run of irons to explain the idea. The rungs do not have to be perfectly even, but the aim is to avoid a five-yard gap in one place and a twenty-yard canyon somewhere else.

That evenness is what lets a golfer commit to a full swing and trust the number. When a set is gapped well, there is a club for every distance a player needs, and none of them overlap.

Loft gapping vs loft jacking

These two terms sound alike and often get mixed up, but they describe different things. Loft is the angle of a single clubface. Loft jacking, sometimes called loft creep, is the long-running trend of manufacturers strengthening iron lofts, meaning they lower them, so the clubs can advertise more distance. Loft gapping is about how the whole set is spaced.

The link between them is that loft jacking is a common cause of gapping trouble. A traditional pitching wedge used to sit around 48 degrees, but many modern distance irons now stamp the pitching wedge at 42 to 44 degrees, according to MyGolfSpy and Livingston Country Club. Drop a standard 54 to 56 degree sand wedge below one of those strong pitching wedges, and you leave a hole of 10 degrees or more, worth around 25 to 30 yards, as the Club Fitting Directory points out.

What good loft gapping looks like

A well-gapped bag climbs in even loft steps from the longest club to the shortest. Through the irons, that step is usually 3 to 5 degrees. Through the wedges, it tightens to 4 to 6 degrees, because those shorter clubs need finer distance control, and Wikipedia notes that most players look for about a 4-degree separation between wedges.

The area that most often goes wrong is the bottom of the bag. A gap wedge earns its name here: it fills the space between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge that loft jacking tends to open up. A clean four-wedge setup built off a traditional pitching wedge might run 46 degrees, then 50 or 52, then 56, then 60.

Why loft gapping matters

Two problems show up when gapping goes wrong, and Golf Digest points to both. Plenty of golfers have no real idea how far each club carries, let alone the gaps between them, so they reach for the wrong club without knowing why. Uneven spacing also hides inconsistencies, such as a five-yard gap at one end of the set sitting next to a fifteen-yard gap at the other.

Clean gapping removes that guesswork. Every yardage a player faces has a club assigned to it, so there is no dead zone that forces a half-hearted three-quarter swing or a punchy overswing. That is why gapping is a standard part of any iron or wedge fitting, where a fitter checks real carry numbers on a launch monitor rather than trusting the numbers stamped on the clubs.
