Speed Training

Speed training in golf is a structured practice for increasing clubhead speed, using lighter-than-normal swings and targeted power work to teach the body and nervous system to move the club faster than it currently does.


What is speed training in golf?

Speed training is the deliberate practice of raising how fast a golfer can swing, separate from working on accuracy or ball striking. Most players have a hidden ceiling on their swing speed. The brain quietly caps how fast it will let the body move to protect muscles and joints from injury, a limit coaches often call the “speed governor.” Speed training works on that ceiling directly, showing the nervous system that a faster motion is safe and repeatable.

The goal is distance. Clubhead speed is the single biggest physical input to how far a golf ball travels, so a golfer who raises their top-end speed can carry the ball farther with the same swing effort. According to Trackman data cited by Golf Digest, each additional mile per hour of clubhead speed adds roughly 2.5 yards of driver distance. That is why speed has become one of the most talked-about areas of amateur golf improvement.

The practice combines two things: a neurological side that resets the brain’s speed limit, and a physical side that builds the power to support the new speed. It happens on the range or in a backyard, not as an on-course swing thought.

Why golfers train for speed

Distance and scoring are linked more tightly than many recreational players assume. Data from Arccos Golf, drawing on billions of recorded shots, showed that adding 10 or more yards off the tee helped 81% of players gain strokes. Mark Broadie, the Columbia professor behind the strokes-gained statistics used on the PGA Tour, reached a similar conclusion: hitting the ball farther off the tee consistently lowers scores.

The gap between skill levels is largely a speed gap. Trackman figures put the average male amateur, around a 14 handicap, near 93 to 95 mph of driver clubhead speed, while scratch golfers average about 106 mph. The PGA Tour average sat above 115 mph through the 2024 season. Even small gains matter for the weekend player, where a 5 mph increase can mean an extra 12 to 13 yards off the tee and a shorter club into the green.

A second benefit has nothing to do with raw yardage. Swinging faster tends to sharpen a golfer’s timing and sequencing, since a well-sequenced swing is usually a faster one. Plenty of players find their contact cleans up as their speed climbs.

How speed training works

The idea at the center of most programs is the “overspeed effect.” When a golfer swings something lighter than a normal driver, the body can move through the motion faster than usual. Repeating that quicker pattern teaches the nervous system that the higher speed is achievable, and the raised ceiling gradually holds even after the golfer picks up their regular club. A full program rests on three connected parts.

Overspeed training

This is the part most people picture when they hear the phrase. A golfer makes maximum-effort swings with a light implement, such as a weighted speed stick, an alignment stick, or even an upside-down driver. Dedicated systems like SuperSpeed Golf use a set of graduated sticks, one lighter than a driver, one close to driver weight, and one heavier, to challenge the nervous system in different ways. The lightest stick produces the overspeed effect, while the heavier one adds a small strength element.

Strength and power

Overspeed work rewires the brain, but muscle supplies the force. Speed in the golf swing comes from explosive rotation built from the ground up, moving through the legs and hips into the torso. Chris Finn of Par4Success, a Titleist Performance Institute physical therapist, stresses that overspeed swings do not build strength on their own, because a two-pound stick is nowhere near enough load to change how strong a golfer is. Real power gains still require resistance training over months.

Technique and sequencing

Power moving through an inefficient swing leaks away before it reaches the ball. The kinematic sequence, meaning the order in which the body accelerates from hips through torso to arms and finally the club, determines how much of a golfer’s speed actually arrives at impact. Good speed training exposes and refines that sequence rather than damaging it, which is why coaches treat technique as the third leg of the process.

Because several terms overlap, golfers often confuse speed training with the pieces inside it or with simply swinging hard. The distinctions matter for understanding what the practice does.

Swinging harder is the instinct that speed training is designed to replace. Effort alone tightens the muscles and disrupts timing, while structured speed work lifts the ceiling so a relaxed, repeatable swing is simply faster than it used to be.

Common misconceptions about speed training

A frequent mistake is treating speed training as strength or power training. Research from Par4Success shows the two produce different results: overspeed work sharpens the nervous system’s efficiency, while lifting builds the raw force behind the swing. A golfer can pick up a few miles per hour of speed without getting any stronger, and the reverse holds too.

Another myth is that training for speed automatically wrecks accuracy. During a speed session, wild swings are expected, since the focus is on the motion rather than the ball. That faster pattern tends to fold into a controlled on-course swing over time rather than replacing it.

Speed training is also far from risk-free. Finn has written that golfers who chase speed without the strength to control it raise their injury risk, particularly when they pile on high swing volumes. TPI’s own studies found no meaningful speed difference between high-volume and low-volume protocols, which suggests that extra swings mostly add injury risk rather than yardage.

Is speed training safe?

For most golfers who build strength alongside it, yes. The danger rises when a player already swings faster than their body can control, which is why TPI recommends checking strength and mobility first.

Does speed training help older or slower players?

It can. Programs have been documented with golfers well into their seventies and eighties. Swing speed naturally declines with age, mostly from lost rotational mobility, so training can offset part of that drop.

Do golfers need special equipment?

Not necessarily. Purpose-built systems add structure and feedback, but the overspeed effect can begin with an alignment stick or an upside-down driver.
