A golf locker room is the part of a clubhouse set aside for storage and changing. Golfers use it to swap street shoes for spikes, stow a bag or a pair of shoes, and clean up after 18 holes. The room does two jobs at once. The first is practical: a secure place to keep clothes and valuables while a player is out on the course. The second is social. Benches, a lounge corner, and often a bar nearby turn the space into a gathering spot where members linger, compare scorecards, and swap stories after their round. On many member visits, the locker room is the first and last stop of the day.
How grand it gets depends entirely on the club. A municipal course might offer a plain bank of metal lockers and a row of showers, while a high-end private club can run to thousands of square feet of wood lockers, leather chairs, and a full-service attendant.
What golfers keep in a locker
Most golfers use a locker for the odds and ends they would rather not carry back and forth from home. That usually means golf shoes, a spare glove, waterproofs, a stash of balls and tees, and sometimes a spare shirt or trousers. At clubs with generous lockers, members store a full bag and a few extra clubs too.
Legacy Lockers, one of the larger US manufacturers of club lockers, notes that golf and country club lockers are typically single-tier (full-height) units at least 15 inches wide, with solid wood doors and engraved nameplates, sized to hold several pairs of shoes, dozens of balls, hats, gloves, and clothing without cramming.
At a public course, a locker tends to be day-use only, and players are usually asked to bring their own lock. At a private club, a member often has a locker assigned to them for the season or for as long as they belong, with their name on the door.

Beyond the lockers themselves, the room is built around getting cleaned up and comfortable. Showers, benches, mirrors, and a washroom are standard almost everywhere. Many clubs add a shoe-cleaning station with brushes or a compressed-air hose so players can knock the dirt off their spikes before walking through the clubhouse.
Higher-end rooms go further. A 2020 renovation covered by Club + Resort Business described a men’s locker room with a central wet area holding four sinks and six showers, plus a steam room, a lounge, and a shoeshine and attendant station. At the top end, the space becomes a destination in its own right. Golf Digest, which surveyed more than 1,800 course-ranking panelists to rank golf’s best locker rooms, highlighted features like cigar rooms and nap rooms, and in some cases a locker-room bar.
The scale can be surprising. Sea Island’s men’s locker room in Georgia runs about 6,000 square feet and is the highest-ranked locker room open to the public, while the men’s room at Forest Creek Golf Club in North Carolina tops 9,000 square feet.
Private club vs public course locker rooms
The biggest source of confusion for newer golfers is how different a locker room can be from one venue to the next. The gap usually comes down to whether the course is private or public.

Not every public course has a locker room at all. Many daily-fee and municipal clubhouses focus on the essentials, a pro shop and a snack bar, and skip the changing facilities. Still, plenty of higher-end public and resort courses now offer them, and the gap between public and private amenities has been closing.
Locker room etiquette
The golf locker room comes with a set of unwritten customs, and knowing them is part of understanding the space. Most clubs expect hats to come off indoors and phone calls to be taken outside. Wet gear should go home rather than sit festering on a communal bench, and tidiness matters, since the room is shared.
Where an attendant cleans shoes or clubs, a small tip is customary. None of this is posted on a sign, but longtime members notice when it is ignored, which is why the etiquette tends to get passed down rather than spelled out.
